Tenements (1 janv. 1880 – 1 janv. 1920)

Description:

Tenements were primarily built on the lower east side of Manhattan, as more and more poor immigrants arrived in New York City. When tenements were built there was practically no laws regulating their construction. Places that once became single-family dwellings were increasingly divided into multiple living spaces to accommodate the mass arrival of other immigrants. Tenements were poorly lit, lacked indoor plumbing and proper ventilation. By the 1900, about ⅔ of New York’s population were living in tenement housing.
