Description:
A high protective tariff (or tax) was signed into law by the U.S. government. South Carolinians - specifically John C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with the high tariffs and felt that they targeted the South unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law, calling it unconstitutional until a "force bill" was threatened which would bring the national army into state to make sure the law was followed. A compromise took place. South Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S. government lowered the tax.
