Description:

Fort Sumter is an island fortification located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. It’s original purpose was constructed as a coastal garrison, but Fort Sumter is mostly known for it being the site of the first shots of the Civil War. Following South Carolina’s secession from the Union, Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort, but Confederate General P.G.T Beauregard and his men attacked Fort Sumter. After 34 hours of exchanging of gunfire, the Union surrendered. This marked the beginning of the Civil War.
