Golden age of Safed, during which the Shulchan Aruch was composed as well as many important works of Kabbalah.Safed, modern Tsfat, is in the Galilee region of the Land of Israel.
The community was declining from beginning of 1600s, and suffered a massacre in 1660, hy"d.
