Description:
A high protective tariff(or tax) was signed into law by the U.S government.South Carolinian's-specifically John C. Calhoun strongly disagree with the high tariffs and felt that they targeted the south unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law,calling it unconstitutional until a "force bill" was threatened which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the law was followed. A compromise took place. south Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S government lowered tax. The U.S would send troops if South Carolina Agreed to pay this lower tax.
