Ethnarch and Gerousia of Alexandria (1 janv. 300 av. J.-C. – 1 janv. 115)
Description:
The Jewish Quarter of Alexandria was run as a near-independent city-state by the ethnarch and the council (gerousia). Jews were also often appointed to positions of leadership over all of Alexandria.
Jewish political independence was recognized by the Greek rulers and by the Roman rulers.
During the Roman Empire, pogroms took place and after a Jewish rebellion in 115-117 CE most of the remaining Jewish community abandoned the city.
Philo of Alexandria was a leading member of this community.
