Description:

- series of meetings of the highest Catholic Church officials
- took place in Trento, Italy, from 1545-1563
- condemned "Protestant heresies" and reaffirmed the doctrines of Catholicism
- recommendations regarding liturgical music included:
1. text should be clear and intelligible
2. counterpoint should not be overly dense or thick
3. banned the use of instruments, except for the organ
4. banned the use of secular cantus firmus
5. displays of virtuosity should be avoided
