First Continental Congress (5 sept. 1774 – 26 oct. 1774)

Description:

Date: September 5 - October 26, 1774

In response to the British Parliament’s enactment of the Coercive Acts in the American colonies, the first session of the Continental Congress convened at Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia. The first major opposition to British policy came in 1765 after the Parliament passed the Stamp Act, a taxation measure designed to raise revenues for a standing British army in America. Most colonists continued to quietly accept British rule until Parliament’s enactment of the Tea Act in 1773, a bill designed to save the faltering East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax and granting it a monopoly on the American tea trade.
