Polyphonic Masses (1 janv. 1420 – 1 janv. 1500)

Description:

Until 1420, mass components were usually composed separately. By 1420, it had become customary for the 5 ordinary components (kyrie, gloria, credo, sanctus, agnus dei) to be a coherent whole. This coherency resulted in the mass compositional genre. A fourth voice was resolutely added below the tenor so that the tenor could have the melody and there still be solid harmonic foundations. The polyphonic mass cycle was the largest, most complex, and most prestigious musical genre in the 1400s.

Types of masses:
- Plainsong mass: mass based on original plainchant.
- Motto mass: there is a recurring motive throughout all the movements.
- Cantus firmus mass: each movement is constructed around the same cantus firmus. The cantus firmus mass could be service music, conveyed meaning through allusion of original source material and text, and connoisseurs could appreciate it.
- Cantus firmus imitation mass: Borrowing the tenor and then some from a polyphonic chanson (usually secular).
