Troubadour song (1 janv. 1100 – 1 janv. 1200)

Description:

The words troubadour and trouvere both translate to "lyric poet" in their own languages (occitan and old french respectively). They began to introduce the idea of contrafactum, putting a new text over an old melody. Their songs are strophic and mostly syllabic, with some possessing a refrain (a repeat of BOTH text and melody). These songs frequently feature the subject of courtly love. Though there is no notation for instruments, paintings show accompanimental instruments.
