Thomas Tallis (1 janv. 1505 – 1 janv. 1585)

Description:

He was an English composer for the Church of England. Though he was himself an unreformed Roman Catholic, he was very good at composing in different styles for the different requirements of the various monarchs he served under. He helped to establish a new tradition for Anglican church music, combining comprehensibility and immediacy with attractive music that appeals to listeners and is rewarding to sing. In 1543, he was posted at the Canterbury Cathedral, where he composed and performed for Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. Tallis was also the teacher of William Byrd. In 1575, Elizabeth I gave he and Byrd exclusive rights to produce and publish polyphonic music. Quite impressively, he managed to maintain respectability in a time of tension between protestants and Catholics.
