She Was Byzantine. Born to a wealthy family, Kassia was granted a superb education and upbringing. Her status as a nun also gave her access to the highest level of music education available to women at the time. Kassia was deeply religious yet acutely aware of the secular world around her. She held empathetic views towards those individuals not involved in the church, often sympathizing with their shortcomings and failures.
