The Western Schism (1 janv. 1378 – 1 janv. 1418)
Description:
“When Pope Gregory XI died in 1378, French cardinals deposed the newly elected Pope Urban VI. They elected a new pope, known as an antipope, to replace him. Named Clement VII, the antipope reestablished the papal court at Avignon. The conflict continued for nearly forty years, with two or rival claimants to the papacy at times. The conflict was resolved at the Council of Constance (1414–1418).”
