Wheat Disadvantages (1 janv. 1850 – 1 déc. 1860)

Description:

Although wheat was the best cash crop, it still had risks and disadvantages. Wheat was very hard on the soil and took nitrogen out very quickly. There was also vagaries of the weather and insect infestation. By the late 1850s wheat prices had gone down. There was also competition that started up between Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. Then in the 1860s, and small bug, chinch bugs, began eating away at the wheat crops in Wisconsin. After that farmers started thinking about other ways to help still grow crops, but still make money. So instead of cash crops they thought of feed crops. This was better suited for Wisconsin’s climate and soil.
