The Black Plague, also known as the Black Death, was a highly infectious disease that began in 1347 and lasted until 1720. The harshest and most disastrous years fell between 1347 and 1351. The plague originally began in Asia and spread throughout Europe by infected animals, commonly rats, and plague ships.
