-9 African American students (Little Rock Nine) are denied access to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas following de jure school integration-Governor Faubus mobilised national guard around Central High School
-Eisenhower criticised (slow to act despite spread of defiance of federal law, lack of leadership on civil rights) but eventually sent in paratroopers
