Before Israel became a full fledged country, it was called Palestine and was under control of the British. On May 14th, 1948, head of the Jewish Agency, announced the establishment of the new State of Israel. The residents of Palestine were absolutely over-joyed.(My Grandmother was there when Palestine became a country. I myself am part Israeli)
