Description:
Towards the end of the 1800's and early 1900's, the United States began to transition from an economy based largely on agricultural to one based on manufacturing of goods and industry development--increasing urbanization and occupational diversity, created a need to educate young people on entering the workforce, vocational guidance in schools became necessary.
Furthermore, a shift in the views of mental illness occurred that took the environment and the social context into consideration, rather than sole based on heredity as assumed in the past.
