On July 16 (29), the commander of the Caucasian Army ordered an offensive in the Ognotsk direction. By the next day, Russian units approached Ognot and began their assault, which lasted until July 19 ( August 1 ). After the capture of the city, the pursuit of the retreating Turkish units began. On the day the Russians took Ognot, Izzet Pasha ordered the 2nd army (in total, the army consisted of five army corps - 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 16th), which had not completed its concentration, to go to attack in the direction of Mush and Bitlis. In the first week of fighting, the advancing 16th corps under the command of Mustafa Kemal had serious, but short-term successes in this direction - by July 25 ( August 7 ), the regiments of the 2nd Caucasian Rifle Division under the command of F.I. Nazarbekov and the 261st Akhulginsky regiment The 66th division under the command of F.A.Potto left Mush and Bitlis with heavy losses, moving first to Tatvan and then to Akhlat. The losses of the Turks were also high. In the Ognot direction, the actions of the Turks were also successful: the 1st and 49th divisions of the 3rd corps occupied Ognot and continued to push the forces of the 4th Caucasian corps, which on July 23 ( August 5 ) was ordered to retreat across the Charborokh-darasi river, to line Khinis - Mush.
