Josef II (E) (1 janv. 1780 – 1 janv. 1790)
Description:
HRE, Son of Maria Theresa, an 'enlightened despot'.
He introduced far-reaching reforms:
- Fixed taxes for all social groups
- Expansion of a centralised, loyal beaurocracy
- Development of a compulsory school system
- Prussian-style reforms of the army
He aspired to bring the Catholic church under his rule, leading to stronger ties between the Church and the monarchy.
Most of his reforms were later reversed by his brother and successor, Leopold II.
