Consolidation of fascist power (1 nov 1922 – 31 déc. 1925)

Description:

- Measures were taken throughout this time period to consolidate Mussolini's and fascist power:

- Won a vote of confidence 1922

- Nationalists joined the fascist party 1923

- Acerbo law passed which would give the popular vote two thirds of seats in parliament to make a strong government, July 1923

- Fascist party increased their vote from 7% to 66% through intimidation, May 1924

- Giacomo Matteotti spoke publicly against the fascists and was murdered 11 days later, April 1924

- There was public revolt against the death and Mussolini took responsibility, and also moved to set himself up as Il Duce (The Leader), January 1925

- Law on Powers of Head of Government passed 1925
- Banned trade unions and political parties
- Press strictly controlled
- Elected local officials replaced with appointed government officials

- Secret police formed (OVRA)
- Powers of arrest increased
- Trial without jury permitted
