The Great Leap Forward (11 h 14 min, 7 mai 1958 ans – 11 h 14 min, 7 mai 1960 ans)

Description:

Mao’s government announced the second Five-Year Plan, The Great Leap forward in 1958, in hope of increasing industrial output to match the West.
Communes ( huge farm communities) were established, in which single individuals lived in dormitories, meals were served in mess halls, and young children were cared for in nurseries while their parents worked long hours.
Gender, age, skills, type of job, and region determined the amount of “work points” an individual earned, which was the basis of a worker’s salary.
In the early 1960s, the government abandoned the program due to the decrease of industrial output and constant famine (20 million individuals died of starvation between 1958 and 1960). Overall, The Great Leap Forward was a complete failure.
