Jewish National Council (Yishuv) (1 janv. 1920 – 1 janv. 1948)

Description:

The Jewish National Council was established by the Zionist movement in Palestine (the Land of Israel) under the British Empire to create institutions of self government for the Jewish community in preparation for the founding of a Jewish nation-state.

The JNC provided transportation, education, health care, and internal defense. It was recognized by the British government as the representative body of the Jewish community, and conducted negotiations with the non-Jewish Palestinian population.

While initially mainly representing European Jews who had arrived as part of Zionist settlement, other segments of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel eventually participated in the JNC.

The Rabbinate, a branch of the JNC, had the power to judge legal cases and to enforce Jewish civil law on the Jewish community. The Rabbinate was divided into the Sephardic Chief Rabbinate (the Rishon leTzion) which was a continuation of the Ottoman Hakham Bashi institution, and the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbinate, a new position created to accommodate the European Jews.

When the State of Israel was declared, many of the Jewish National Council's institutions became part of the new state.
