"Up to the mountains and down to the villages" campaign (18 janv. 1968 – 18 janv. 1972)
Description:
- The Red Guard suggested by Mao to go into the rural villages of China to experience life as a land worker
- Done to reign in control of the Red Guards
- The Red Guards formed rival factions which fought to prove greater loyalty to Mao
- PLA stepped in and took over the Red Guards role of the cultural purification
- Implemented the "cleansing of the class ranks" campaign 1968-71 to remove the last traces of capitalism
- The students were not skilled in farming and so added little benefit to the farms
-In some areas the students taught the peasants (increased literacy, etc)
- The students did not enjoy it and so this caused them to doubt the word of Mao
