The Popular Front (1 janv. 1933 – 1 janv. 1934)

Description:

Spain was dividing into two blocs. The left had become increasingly alarmed by the example of the 'fascist' right destroying the left in Germany in 1933 and in Austria in 1934. The CEDA was regarded by the left as a fascist party, and the entry of the CEDA into the government in October 1934 led to attempted revolution in Asturias. One effect of the defeat of this uprising was to bring together the long-divided left into the Popular Front coalition. The Popular Front in Spain's Second Republic was an electoral coalition and pact signed in January 1936 by various left-wing political organizations, instigated by Manuel Azaña for the purpose of contesting that year's election.
