Originally known as Amenhotep IV before turning away from the traditional Egyptian pantheon of gods and worshipping 'the Aten' (sun -god).
Original name Amenhotep III contains the name of the god Amun, so was abandoned for Akhenaten (containing the god Aten)
Husband of Nefertiti, and predecessor/potential father of pharaoh Tutankhaten (who reverted to the old gods and became Tutankhamun).
