Beer Hall Putsch (8 nov 1923 – 9 nov 1923)

Description:

Adolf Hitler and his followers held the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. They were unhappy with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and aimed to take over the state government and eventually the federal Weimar government. Hitler was convicted of treason and sentenced to 5 years of prison however he served less than one year.

Causes
1. Hitler was frustrated by the Germany’s loss of the First World War. He and the Nazi Party were also angry with how the Weimar Republic handled the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles. He thought that the republic was weak for accepting it and allowing his country to fall deep into depression economically and politically.
2. Hitler’s putsch was inspired by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Mussolini led a march on Rome in October 1922 and had been successful in overthrowing the Italian government.

Effects
1. After the Beer Hall Putsch, Hitler’s trial and his time in prison, Hitler became a national figure and even more popular with the Germans. With his new followers he rebuilt the Nazi Party and gained more political power
2. While in prison he wrote his political autobiography, “Mein Kampf”, which translates to “My Struggle”. This further increased his popularity.
