Corn law of 1828 (15 juill. 1828 – 1 juin 1846)

Description:

This law was implemented by the duke of Wellington and Britain's prime minister, to alleviate the hardships to the consumer caused by the corn law of 1815. The new corn law was passed by parliament and it allowed corn (grain) to be imported and established import duties on a sliding scale. This meant that higher duties on on foreign grain when the prices were low and English prices increased. Wellington's support of law angered both landlords and liberals. Poor harvests in the late 1830s led to the formation of the Anti-corn law league, and eventually the corn laws were abolished.
