The Roman Republic (6 févr. 509 av. J.-C. – 19 janv. 27 av. J.-C.)

Description:

The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BCE, and lasted until around 27 BCE when the Empire was formed. In the earliest stages the Roman Republic was made up of Patricians exclusively, who were pretty much just the most wealthy and powerful families. Eventually the Plebians realised that they made up most of the army and got little of the money it made, so they went on strike. They refused to relent until they got some kind of representation, and so the council of plebs was formed in 494 BCE (Ancient History Encyclopedia). Rome was never really a true democracy, but this was a step in the right direction. However, the poor were still poor and the rich were still rich. One third of the population was still slaves, and the rich still basically controlled the city because of the land they owned. Life simply wasn’t good unless you were rich, but from a historical point of view Rome did very well throughout the Republic period. During this time they won all three of the Punic wars against Carthage, and all four of the Macedonian Wars against Greece. The Republic allowed for expansion and profit, and ultimately set Rome up for it's peak at around 110 AD.
