Old Science Thinking (1 juin 2 – 31 déc. 1599)

Description:

- The Ptolemaic Universe

--> middle of the 2nd century CE: Greek scholar Ptolemy envisioned a motionless earth surrounded by a series of nine hollow, concentric spheres that revolved around it, and beyond the spheres Christian astronomers located heaven, the realm of God

- Planetary Movement

--> Ptolemy's theory didn't account for the erratic movements of the planets, so astronomers came up with a series of adjustments known as epicycles - small, circular revolutions that planets made round a point in their spheres, even while the spheres themselves revolved around the earth

- The Copernican Universe

--> in 1543: Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus using observational data, and argued that the sun rather than the earth stood at the center of the universe and that the planets, including the earth, revolved around the sun

--> theory clashed with the public because it challenged prevailing scientific theories and threatened cherished religious beliefs that the earth and humanity were unique creations of God

--> After some time, Copernicus's theory became the accepted "model of the universe"
