The Battle of Khalkhin-Gol (11 mai 1939 – 16 sept. 1939)

Description:

One of the many clashes that the Japanese military, with the Kwantung army, had against the Soviet Union on the Manchuria-Mongol border. This manifested into a major conflict between Japanese and Soviet troops.

Importance to Japanese expansion: The failure of this conflict left a lasting impact on Japanese expansion. With a cease-fire called and the loss of the Japanese army, Japan seemed more inclined to venture into southeast Asia. The conflict concluded with a large cost and need for more successful expansion ventures.

International Response: The United Kingdom and the United States both favored and hoped that Japanese expansion was aimed towards the Soviet Union. These clashes also increased Soviet-Japanese tension, although in 1941 both nations agreed to sign the Japanese-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact finalizing their growing tensions.
