2000 Sydney Olympics (15 sept. 2000 – 1 oct. 2000)
Description:
The 2000 Sydney Olympics gives a stage for the support of reconciliation. Cathy Freeman, an Indigenous Australian sprinter, lit the Olympic flame and also won the 400m final. She then draped herself in both the Aboriginal and Australian flags. The Olympics close out when Midnight Oil, an Australian rock band, performed in the closing ceremony. They performed their song 'Beds are Burning' a statement of support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples while wearing custom 'sorry suits.'
