Description:

Was a reluctant supporter of civil rights, a reactive rather than proactive President.

Against ending 'separate but equal' but gave federal support for desegregation of schools. Sent members of the 101 Airborne Division to put Arkansas National Guard under federal control after they prevented African Americans entering a formerly white school. He was put in a position where he had to act so did so accordingly. It helped that he wasn't a Republican and wasn't from the South.

Created the Civil Rights Act which reaffirmed African Americans' right to vote.
