The Enclosure Movement (1 janv. 1700 – 1 janv. 1800)

Description:

The Enclosure Movement was a policy put forth mainly in the nations of the Netherlands and England at this time. Enclosure refers to the privatization of farmland under increasingly powerful landlords. The landlords needed larger fields in order to produce greater quantities of foodstuffs that could be sold at market. This by default pushed poor farmers off of the land. The rise of the rural wage earners class produced opportunities in new economic sectors such as Cottage Industries that spurred economic and commercial development in England as well as the Netherlands. The Enclosure movement represented a change over time through the privatization of previously held common land. this is seen as a progressive change as other lands such as France refused to do this on the large scale for fear of peasant reactions. In other ways this was not a radical change because the nobility and aristocracy still held much more power and influence over the peasantry as evidenced by the implimentation of these policies in commercially developed areas.
