Georges Cuvier (7 août 1770 – 18 mai 1832)
Description:
He was largely credited with developing the science of paleontology. Cuvier found that each rock layer is characterized by a unique group of fossil species. Then he suggested that catastrophes corresponded to the boundaries between the strata he studied. The appearance and disappearance of species led him to suggest that species can go extinct.
