Description:

Protestant and particularly Puritan religion dominant and the concept of ‘original sin’ was prevalent.
Morals and good behaviour essential to ‘save the soul’.
Experience of childhood was class as well as gender dependant.
Children needed supervision and punishment.
Children of merchant and artisanal families were educated to suit status.
Children worked to support family income and to keep them occupied, generally alongside extended family
