The Mongols under Jani Beg beseiged Caffa and the Venetian territory of Tana following a brawl between Italians and Muslims in Tana.
The siege of Caffa was lifted after an Italian relief force killed 15,000 Mongol troops and destroyed their siege machines.
Jani Beg renewed the siege and cut off any supplies to the city, leading to miserable conditions within Caffa.
The Mongol army allegedly threw the bodies of Mongol warriors who had died of plague over the walls of the besieged city, which is considered one of the earliest examples of biological warfare.
A serious epidemic of Bubonic plague devastated Jani Beg’s forces, giving hope to the Italians, and he was forced to lift the siege.
In early 1318 Pope John XXII established a Latin Church diocese of Kaffa, as a suffragan of Genoa.
In 1462, Caffa placed itself under the protection of King Casimir IV of Poland.
