1810 whalers came to New Zealand to kill whales and seals because they were a delicacy at the time and they also introduced cotton clothes, stone tools, potatoes, stone tools, tobacco, alcohol, muskets and diseases.
The musket wars began in 1818 and this was a really cruel and gory time people would be killed in the masses and musket would be bought for hundreds upon hundreds of potatoes. Potatoes were so sought after because they were classifiyed as a super food becuase they were easier to grow and transport thatn kumara.
Musket wars ended after a grueling 12 years of fight death and land being lost. This greusome war ended becuase the potatoes and muskets which were so sought after had been distrubated every where and everyone had one. So the war ended and the treaty of waitangi was signed.
The treaty of waitangi was signed on the 6th of February 1840 to declare peace between maori and pakeha. But that was not what happened the treaty was unfair because the pakeha wrote the treaty but didn't know maori very well so it got all mixed up and unfair.
Hongi Hika went to England in 1820 to make the very first maori dictionary. He also while he was there he got lots of muskets and was very good strategist with them and became the very first maori king.
The New Zealand wars started between the pakeha and moari because the moari found the treaty unfair. The treaty was unfair because the pakha which wrote the treaty didnt know the moari langue very well. Some pakeha even sided with the moari becuase they thought it was unfair aswell and vice versa.
The New Zealand wars ended and 3,000 pakeha and maori had died. The war stopped because everyone had lost lots ; special land, family members, beloved friends and lots of mana.
The british Government contaminated 2.5 million hectares of maori land from them. This happened because the british were saying the acted in open rebellion against the crown. The outcome of this was that the moari became very poor because the crown was buying land for absurd prices.
On October the 6th Captain James Cooks ship the HMS endeavour sailed into a New Zealand bay and had the first sighting of maori and it did not go down well. They blew their trumpets and fired their cannons and the local maori took that as a sign of war. Cook later journeyed to hawaii where he met his demise.
In the 1200 bc the maori arrived at Aotearoa in wakas. Historians think that they came from the pacific islands because their beliefs and culture is very similar to pacific islanders.
In 1642 a dutch explorer called Abel Tasman was the first human except the maori to see New Zealand. He also was the person who gave new zealand its first english name, Nieuw Zeeland. Also he is the person who the tasman sea is named after.
In 1865 the maori land court was created. The purpose was to convert the maori way of holding land to british of legal title. The maori land court did not work out though the judges were pakeha and did not speak maori very well and only the front row could hear.
