------------Warsaw Pact------------
~May 14, 1955~
*A pact signed in Warsaw,
Germany (hence the name),
including the Soviet Union,
Albania, Poland, Romania,
Hungary, East Germany,
Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria
as members.
* This was seen as a
militaristic threat to the U.S.A.--------------Korean War---------------
~June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953~
*North Korea was supported by
Russia because they were both
communist, while South Korea
was supported by the U.S. for
obvious reasons. North Korea
pushed back the border, but
the U.S. helped push it back its
origins. Overall, nothing was
accomplished and the two
countries are still divided today.
*Shows the efforts the U.S.
went through to eradicate
communism----U-2 Reconnaissance Plane----
~(Flights Started in) May 1960~
*A reconnaissance plane flew
over Russian territory during
the month of May, but
unfortunately, the plane was
shot down on its first flight.
*A huge advance in aerial

~ April 17-19, 1961~
*Another Communist and
Democratic standoff, but
this time it's for a revolting
Cuba.
*Another circumstance
that shows the hatred
between the Democrats
and the Communists.--------------Cuban Missile Crisis--------------
~October 14-28, 1962~
*A standoff between Russia and U.S.A.
that was caused by the missiles put in
Cuba by the Russian government.
Resulted in Russia taking their missiles
out of Cuba and the U.S. taking theirs
out of Turkey.
*Closest America and Russia ever got
to nuclear war, reaching DEFCON 2.----------------SA.L.T. 1----------------
~November 17, 1969~
*The Soviet General Secretary, Leonid Brezhnev, and
U.S. president, Richard Nixon. both met to speak
about arms limitations in Finland. These meetings
were first planned by Nixon's predecessor, Johnson.
*First time that the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. agreed to limit
the number of nuclear missiles that both could have.------Soviets Invade Afghanistan------
~December 1979 - February 1989~
*An attempt by the U.S.S.R. to
subdue the Afghan Civil War,
while still invading Afghanistan
*A turning point in the war
because the Afghans stood
up to the Soviets and won
without the U.S.A.'s help.----------Reunited Germany----------
~November 9, 1989~
*The Berlin wall was brought
down, so that Germany could
be whole again. People even
fled through Hungary to escape
East Germany, before the wall
came down.
*The first time since 1945, that
they have had one, unified
government.----Berlin Blockade and Airlift----
~June 24, 1948 - May 12, 1949~
* Berlin became sealed
off from East Berlin and
East Germany.
*All rail systems
were blocked off, so the allied
powers had to send aircrafts
over West Berlin to drop care

~Oct 4, 1957 - 1975~
*Started off with the Russian vessel, Sputnik, meaning
"traveler" in English. This advancement in technology
made America jealous, so they founded NASA in order to
beat Russia.
*Ended when an Apollo-Soyuz joint mission rendezvoused
in orbit and 1 Russian and 1 American astronaut shook hands
through the docking bay. Symbolizing that the Cold War
was coming to an end.
