Dec 1857- Great Neapolitan Earthquake Death Count: 11,000 Prompted Robert Mallet, Irishman cited as first earthquake engineer, to write book, Report on the Great Neapolitan Earthquake of 1857, on the Italian earthquake.
Oct 1891- Mino–Owari Earthquake Death Count: 7,000 Modern research on earthquake- resistant structures began. Japanese government set up earthquake investigation committee. First to propose the using of lateral forces to account for forces exerting on the building.
Dec 1908- Messina Earthquake Death Count: 58,000 Similar things happened. Italian government appointed engineers to study earthquakes and craft structures that would stand through an earthquake.
Apr 1908- Great San Francisco Earthquake Death Count: 1,000 American earthquake sparked, but not too strong because at time, California sparsely populated.
Today Earthquake studies have spread internationally. Lots of research and knowledge about earthquakes. People more and more safe from earthquakes.
Périodes
First era of the 20th Century - Attempts to develop consistent theories about nature of earthquakes
Second era of the 20th Century - Better theories, but little seismic stations to find more about ground motions and damage done by earthquakes
Third era of the 20th Century - Lots of instrumental seismic stations, theories supported by observation
