Jan 1, 1863: Emancipation Proclamation: it changed the federal legal status of more than 3 million enslaved people in the designated areas of the South from slave to free. As soon as a slave escaped the control of the Confederate government, by running away or through advances of federal troops, the slave became legally free.
Mar 3, 1865: Foundation of Freedmen’s Bureau: Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, was established in 1865 by Congress to help millions of former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the Civil War by providing food, housing and medical aid, established schools and offered legal assistance.
1868: Impeachment of Andrew Johnson: The House's primary charge against Johnson was with violation of the Tenure of Office Act, passed by Congress the previous year. Specifically,he had removed from office Edwin McMasters Stanton, the Secretary of War— whom the Tenure of Office Act was largely designed to protect— and attempted to replace him with Brevet Major General Lorenzo Thomas.
1877: Compromise of 1877: Republican Rutherford B. Hayes becomes President over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden on the understanding that Hayes would remove the federal troops from the South
1876: Munn v. Illinois: A Supreme Court that decided that was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court upheld the power of government to regulate private industries.
Panic of 1873: American post-Civil War inflation, rampant speculative investments (overwhelmingly in railroads), the demonetization of silver in Germany and the United States, property losses in the Chicago (1871) and Boston (1872) fires, and other factors put a massive strain on bank reserves, which plummeted in New York City in September and October 1873 from $50 million to $17 million.
Dawes Act 1887 - Adopted by congress, authorized the president of the united states to survey native american tribal land and divide it into allotments for individual indians. This act forced Native Americans so assimilate to american culture.
Sherman Silver Purchase Act 1890 - Law passed by congress to increase the amount of silver the government was required to purchase every month. Passed in response to growing complaints from farmers’ and miners.’
Indian Appropriations Act - After years of trying to open up Indian territory, President Grover Cleveland, on march 2, 1889,signed the 1889 which officially opened the unassigned lands to white settlers under tenets of the homestead.
