1929 The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
1980 Tito dies. Without his tight control over ethnic tensions, nationalist differences begin to flare up.
1989 Milosevic becomes President of the Republic of Serbia.
1993 The Captain Dragan Foundation claims to be the largest non-government organisation in Serbia.
2000 A popular uprising begins due to presidential elections and a general strike is called. Around 1 million people flood into Belgrade and angry crowds attack the Parliament building with the security forces either joining in with the people or retreating. Milosevic loses his support base and quits. Mr Kostunica is sworn in as President.
1939 Serbia becomes one of the six republics that comprise the new Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under the Prime Ministership of Josep Broz Tito.
1948 Expulsion of Yugoslavia from the communist Comintern due to the suspicions Stalin held about Tito and his followers.
2002 Serbia issues arrest warrants for the President of Serbia, Milan Milutinovic, and three other top Milosevic aides.
2003 Elections were held which saw a resurgence of right-wing, anti-Western parties, but the pro-reform parties were able to form a coalition and eventually form a government. Plus Serbia’s first domestic war crimes trial opens in Belgrade with six Serbs appearing in the court accused of killing around 200 civilians in the Croatian town of Vukovar in 1991.
2006 Serbia holds its a referendum to approve a new constitution.
2009 Serbia submits a formal application to join the European Union.
2010 Serbian Parliament passes resolution apologising for the 1995 massacre of thousands of Muslims by Bosnian Serb forces in the Srebrenica.
