In 1649, Hennig Brand discovered the first element. The first element was phosphorous.
A total of 63 elements had been discovered. Scientists, started to notice patterns in the element's properties.
Johann Dobereiner noticed that elements of similar chemical properties are grouped together based on atomic weight.
The Law of Triads was created. The law says that nature has created elements that are similar. The middle element is an average of the elements on either side when ordered by atomic weight.
A.E.Beguyer de Chancourtois published the first periodic table. He pull of the elements on a cylinder increasing the atomic weight. Then he put closely related elements vertically.
Dmitri Mendeleev's periodic table became public in 1869
Lother Meyer's periodic table became public in 1870
Dmitri Mendeleev was nominated for the Nobel Prize when he discovered new elements. He discovered new elements when he filled in some of the hole in the periodic table. For example the wide gap of atomic number from element to element.
Lord Rayleigh discovered a new element that did not fit in any of the previous categories.
Argon was placed in a new group called Noble Gases.
Ernest Rutherford connected that nuclear charge in the nucleus is proportional to the atomic weight of the element.
Glenn Seaborg discovered new elements such as: element 94 to 102.

Over the next 200 years, scientist became more interested in finding new elements. Scientists also became interested in their compounds.
Jean Baptiste Dumas, Leopold Gmelin, Ernst Lenssen, Max von Pettenkofer, and J.P. Cooke discovered 10 new elements.
