April: Mao's infamous "Little Red Book" begins publication. https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/works/red-book/ October: China becomes the world's fifth nuclear power.
Mao's "Little Red Book" continues being distributed to the youth and working class.
May: The Communist Party of China (CCP) proclaims the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. June: First organized Red Guard brigade formed, party calls for the purging of all "imperialists." August: Zedong and the party continue the call for purging rightists and a mass revolution. September: More than a thousand people are murdered or forced to suicide by the Red Guard in Shanghai. August-November: Tiananmen Square receives estimated 11 million Red Guards on eight different occasions.
January: Biao and Jianq Qing initiate "January Storm," the purging of Shanghai officials. July: Insurrections erupt in big cities.
October: Liu Shaoqi resigns from all political posts under pressure from Red Guards. December: Mao starts "Up to the Mountains, Down to the Countryside" re-education initiative, relocating many youths to rural areas.
