Title: Proclamation of 1763 Date: October 7, 1763 This was issued by the Brittish in order to appease the Native Americans by putting a limit to where colonists could settle. Colonists were mad at this proclamation because it limitted their expansion.
Title: Sugar Act Date: April 5, 1764 British passed this act to prevent the smuggling of sugar, the colonists were angry due to more forced restrictions.
Title: Currency Act Date: September 1, 1764 British passed this act to regulate the paper money issued by the colonies; to protect British merchants from being paid in depreciated currency. Colonists were mad because this act made it harder for colonists to pay their debts and taxes.
Title: Stamp Act Date: March 22, 1765 British passed this act to help recover their money from the 7 Years War and to help pay British soldiers stationed in the colonies. Colonists were mad because they believed that the British had no right to tax them.
Title: Quartering Act Date: March 24, 1765 British passed this act in order to house additional soldiers that came from Britain and to effectively collect taxes. Colonists were mad because they saw no need for the troops after the 7 Years War.
Title: Repeal of Stamp Act and Passage of Declaratory Act Date: March 18, 1766 British repealed the Stamp Act after colonists reacted with overwhelming anger. They replaced it with the Declaratory Act to enforce taxing in colonies. Colonists were enraged because it gave Britain more power over them.
Title: Townshend Acts Date: June 15 - July 2, 1767 The British passed these to gain more authority to tax colonists the same way the citizens of Britain was taxed (placed taxes on all goods). Colonists reacted by reviving an agreement to not import anything from Britain.
Title: Tea Act Date: December 16, 1773 The Tea Act was passed in order to save the East India Company from bankruptcy (lowered taxes it paid to the British government). Colonist merchants were angered because the act created a monopoly and the merchants were at a huge disadvantage.
Title: Coercive/Intolerable Acts Date: March - September 1774 The British passed these acts to punish the Massachusetts' colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The colonists were mad at these acts because they could not handle such unfair laws, leading these acts to be called the "untolerable" acts.
Title: Battle of Lexington and Concord Date: April 19, 1775 Taking place in Lexington and in Concord, this marked the start of the Revolutionary War. This is significant because it led to the meeting of the Second Continental Congress and sparked a war between the colonies and Britain.
Title: Second Continental Congress Date: May 10, 1775 Convening in Philadelphia, the Second Continental Congress created a petition to King George III that pledged loyalty to the Crown and asked for a peaceful solution. KG III saw this as a rebellion so he mobilized troops to invade. The congress also prepared for war and created a Continental Army.
Title: Battle of Bunker Hill Date: June 17, 1775 Although the colonists lost, this battle was important because the colonists made Britain suffer heavy casualties which boosted the unexperienced Continental Army. This battle was fought at a hill (Bunker Hill) in Charleston, Massachusetts.
Title: Declaration of Independence Date: July 4, 1776 Signed in Philadelphia, The Declaration of Independence is very significant because it officially severed the ties between the Colonies and Great Britain. It stated certain ideals that the colonists thought were important such as liberty and equality.
Title: Battle of Saratoga Date: September 19, 1777 Occurring on the Hudson River in New York, this battle was important because it marked a turning point in the war for the Colonists. Up until this point, they were losing the war but because of this battle, the French allied with the colonists in an effort to win against Britain.
Title: Battle of Yorktown Date: September 28, 1781 This battle was important because it marked the last major battle in the war and was a victory for the colonists. Cornwallis surrendered to Washington. This was fought at Yorktown, Virginia.
Title: Treaty of Paris Date: September 3, 1783 This treaty was signed in Paris, France, and it was of significance because it officially ended the war and forced the British to recognize the colonies as a sovereign nation. This officially cut ties with Britain.
