Unfortunately, none of the Pueblos agree.The Spanish continue replacing the Puebloan rituals with Christian rituals.
Governor Trevino ordered the arrest and imprisonment of
47 medicine men for heresy. 3 were hung, and one committed suicide.Pope is one of the Medicine Men arrested.
He refuses to be converted to Christianity.To gain the release of the Pope, 70 warriors captured
Governor Trevino as a hostage and threatened to
revolt. The remaining prisoners were releasedThe Pope is released. He starts making alliances with other Pueblos.The newly formed alliance sends a message saying
that they would kill all the Spanish before allowing
another one of their Medicine Men to be harmed.Governor Otermin, aware of this conspiracy, calls for re-enforcements.A small number of troops (47) arrive in response .Governor Otermin is informed of the planned revolt. (Aug 9). The Pueblo Revolt, led by the Pope, officially begins.
They plan to exterminate the Spanish and the killings begin.
(Aug 10)Pope and Governor Otermin meet up.
Both make demands. Both get refused.
(Aug 15)Governor Otermin retreats to the Palace of the Governors
in Santa Fe with his troops. (Aug 16)Governor Otermin battles the Puebloans, killing 300 of them. (Aug 20)Governor Otermin and about 2,000 others begin the long trek back
to El Paso, Texas from Santa Fe, New Mexico. (Aug 21)During the entirety of the event, about 2,350 Spaniards are killed.The Spanish attempt to regain territory, but are defeated.The Spanish try again to reclaim territory,
and are defeated again.The medicinal leader Pope dies.The Spanish pull off a successful reconquest,
lead by the new Governor, Diego de Vargas
