Heian Period 794 CE - 1185 CE The Heian period, referred to as the Golden Age, saw an amazing thriving in paintings and literature which became a huge part of Japanese culture. During this period, Japanese culture was heavily influenced by the Chinese religions (Buddhism and Taoism) leaving an immense impact on the progress of Japanese culture in the future.
Kamakura Period 1185 CE - 1333 CE The Kamakura period marks the governence of the Kamakura shogunate and the first ever shogun of Japan, Minamoto no Yoritomo. This period of Ancient Japan was largely defined by the rise of the warrior class, with which the ideals of loyalty and bravery were placed in the highest regard.
Ashikaga Period 1336 - 1603 CE The Ashikaga period saw the first steps in the establishment of modern commercial, transportation, and urban networks. Even though there was great civil unrest during this time, the period experienced great cultural growth, particularly under the influence of Zen Buddhism which was introduced a thousand years earlier.
Tokugawa Period 1603 CE - 1867 CE The Tokugawa period was the final period of traditional Japan. Some call it the pinnacle of Japanese art as it flourished during this period. It was a time of peace, political stability, and economic advancement under the shogunate. However, with that peace came strict practices to maintain social order.
