First SUBWAY store opens in Bridgeport, Connecticut. First known as "Pete's Super Submarines' Founded by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck, who offered to help DeLuca pay his college tuition by opening a sandwich shop together.
Name changed to Pete's SUBWAY
By 1974, the duo owned and operated 16 submarine sandwich shops throughout Connecticut. Realizing they would not reach their 32 store goal in time, they franchised the company.
