Year 645 AD -- The Taika reform is introduced. The Fujiwara era starts.
Year 710 AD -- Nara becomes the first permanent capital of Japan.
Year 784 AD -- The capital moves from Nara to Nagaoka
Year 794 AD -- The capital moves to Heian, or what is now known as Kyoto
Year 1016 AD -- Fujiwara Michinaga becomes regent, marking the peak of the Fujiwara power
Year 1159 AD -- The Taira Clan, under Taira Kiyomori, rise to power after the Heiji War.
Year 1175 AD -- The Buddhist Jodo sect (Pure land sect) is introduced.
Year 1191 AD -- The Zen sect is introduced.
Year 1192 AD -- Minamoto Yoritomo is appointed shogun and establishes the Kamakura government in Kamakura.
Year 1221 AD -- The Jokyu Disturbance ends a struggle between Kamakura and Kyoto, resulting in the supremacy of the Hojo regents in Kamakura.

Year 1274 AD -- The Mongols try to invade Japan, but fail mainly because of bad weather conditions.

Year 1334 AD -- Kemmu Restoration: the emperor restores power over Japan.
Year 1336 AD -- Ashikaga Takauji invades and captures Kyoto.
Year 1337 AD -- The emperor flees and establishes the Southern court in Yoshino.
Year 1338 AD -- Takauji establishes the Muromachi government and a second emperor in Kyoto (Northern court).
Year 1392 AD -- Unification of the Southern and Northern courts.
Year 1542 AD -- Portuguese introduce firearms and Christianity to Japan.
Year 1568 AD -- Nobunaga enters Kyoto
Year 1573 AD -- The Muromachi government collapses.
Year 1575 AD -- The Takeda clan is defeated in the battle of Nagashino.
Year 1582 AD -- Nobunaga is murdered and succeeded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Year 1588 AD -- Hideyoshi confiscates the weapons of farmers and religious institutions in the "Sword Hunt".
Year 1590 AD -- Japan is reunited after the fall of Odawara (Hojo).
Year 1598 AD -- Death of Hideyoshi.
Year 1600 AD -- Tokugawa Ieyasu defeats his rivals in the battle of Sekigahara.
Year 1603 AD -- Ieyasu is appointed shogun and establishes the Tokugawa government in Edo (Tokyo).
