45 BC: Julius Caesar becomes a dictator for life, ending the Roman Republic.
44 BC: Julius Caesar is assassinated by the senate.
27 BC: Octavius calls himself Augustus, or Emporer, starting the Roman Empire.
64 AD: Most of Rome was destroyed in a fire, also known as The Great Fire of Rome.
380 AD: Christianity becomes the official religion, having a signifiant impact on western civilization to this day.
395 AD: Rome splits its nation into the Western Roman Empire and the Easter Roman Empire.
410-476 AD: Rome is attacked by the Visigoths, beginning the downfall of the Roman Empire. In 476 AD, Emperor Romulus Augustus is driven out of office and the Middle Ages begin.
